The Sounders rivalry with the Whitecaps reaches back to 1974 when they both joined the NASL, and through the years they have faced each other on and off through many other leagues as soccer struggled to establish itself in North America. Well, we are now into year 4 of the Sounders FC, and the second year of the Whitecaps joining the MLS.

Yesterday proved that both northwest teams are no longer struggling for relevance, but for dominance in the top heavy Western Conference.

On this trip, Crystal and I were joined by my good friends Dan and Dan (aka Dlee, as he was the second of the two Dans I met) in the Sounders away section. We stood with the ECS which had a very strong showing at 800 strong (not including those who made their way into other sections of the stadium wearing rave green).

The conclusion of our 3 hour car ride north had us at Pivo Public House just a few blocks from BC Place. Our plan was to arrive before 11:45am to watch the Chelsea v. Bayern Munich Champions League Final. We spent the first half at the pub enjoying the food. I suggest the triple fries and the chicken sliders.

At half time we made our way to the stadium to take our seats, as the stadium was also showing the final. We watched the end of regular time on the gigantic screens hanging over the field, but unfortunately didn’t get to see the conclusion as it ran into the start of the game.

The game ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw, with Fredy Montero scoring in the final minute of regular time on a curling effort past the flat footed keeper. From our angle in the corner on the opposite side of the stadium we couldn’t actually tell if the ball went it right away, so there was a half second delay between the goal and the supporters erupting in celebration. The way the keeper stood there staring at the ball without even trying for it had me convinced that the ball went wide and had hit the outside of the side net. What a way to end a game against your local rivals.

As it was only a day trip, we explored a few nearby neighborhoods and ended up in Chinatown. I’ve never been able to make it there in the past, so it was a pretty cool experience. We first went to a little bakery which had both Chinese and Filipino pastries and bought ourselves a few snacks. Then we went to a nearby park to enjoy our sweets.

We also stopped by a macaroon shop to visit with Dlee’s cousin. She hooked us up with the goods.

The drive back involved lengthy conversation about politics, religon, The Avengers, comics, my hatred for Avatar, and other lovely things while Crystal tried (unsuccessfully) to sleep.

All in all, a very successful trip and successful Saturday. Something to look forward to is another trip as there is another away game to Vancouver in September….

Blue Scholars show at the Showbox last Saturday had the be the highlight of last weekend.

Good show, really happy I made it out. The opening act was The Physics who I really liked. Bambu was next up, I’m not huge on his stuff but it wasn’t bad. Headliners killed it. The Blue Scholars know how to put on a show, I always love their music and they did a good job of throwing in a little of the old stuff with the new album. Picked up the album and their Stussy colab shirt while I was there.

Right before the concert went to my first Sounders game in 6 weeks which was really great. Walked from the stadium to the Showbox for the show. After the show went up on Capitol Hill and grabbed Dick’s burgers. Saturday was live.

Woke up early the next morning to go to Monroe for the final Evergreen Drift Pro-am of the year. Then made the drive from Monroe down to Seattle to pick up Crystal and we went to the Puyallup Fair to eat lots of good/bad for you food. I think I made myself sick, but it’s a once a year thing right?

Crazy weekend, thanks for those who participated.

Yea, forget the half time show, it was bad, blah blah blah. I don’t know what you people were expecting form this highly talented group, but obviously you put too much faith into them. I blame you more than them.

This though, real bad. Like, pretty terrible.

This was horrible. Not only wrong, but sounded horrible. You got the National Anthem wrong. Not the first one to ever mess it up, but maybe the most high profile of them. And you sounded so bad.

To avoid this in the future, I think they should just play Marvin Gaye singing the national anthem at the 1983 NBA All Star game at all sporting events, unless someone could prove that they could sing it equal or better. I don’t care if it’s over 25 years old, it’s not like they changed the words or anything. I don’t care that it’s the wrong sport even, it’s still just about the best sounding version ever. And it would avoid anyone messing it up in the future.

Really?

Yes. There are people out there that are still convinced that Felix Hernandez wasn’t the best pitcher in the AL. Somehow, having the “league’s lowest earned run average, 2.27; the lowest opposing batting average, .212; the most innings pitched, 249 1/3, and missed by two of having the most strikeouts (232)…” doesn’t make you the best pitcher. Why? Because you didn’t win games. Oh, you mean due to your teammates inability to score runs? He isn’t the best pitcher, because his teammates weren’t good. What?

My understanding is that the Cy Young goes to the best pitcher, not the pitcher who has the best teammates. How does one measure being the best pitcher? Is it wins? Or is it how well they actually pitch, based on statistics? Well, some stupid guy with a blog says it’s wins. Murray Chass says Felix shouldn’t have won because 13 wins doesn’t merit such an award, even though the wins were mostly influenced (negatively) by your teammates. Well I have a blog too, and I say he should have won and this Murray guy is stupid.

So, wins should be the only factor. CC Sabathia should win because he had the best offense in baseball. He could give up 5 runs and still win by 2. Doesn’t matter, he had the wins. That has to be the worst way to decide who wins award ever. Why even bother trying to figure out who has the best stats, just go by the W-L record. Makes the job super easy. That’s what Chass and his old friends say, as they voted against Felix, just as they should have, as the vote for Felix was nothing more than internet bullying and a trendy fad.

It’s just so frustrating, I don’t know how many times I turned on a Mariners game, to see Felix go 7, 8, 9 innings with 1 or no runs and have a no decision, or a loss. You should almost never lose a game 1-0 unless the other pitcher is lights out too, which is almost never the case with the Mariners.

Stupid old people getting me riled up.

Yea, I watched the Pacquiao fight, I’m glad he won, but check this video out!

Oh yea, the fight. Super underwhelming. I don’t know if Margarito is always that slow, but he had to be at least half the speed of Pacquiao. Even his jab is slower than any punch Manny throws.

The best part for me was the dude standing next to me at the bar. His family was from Mexico, and he boxed for 8 years. That’s all I got from his yelling at the tv/crowd. Within 3 rounds, he declared that the fight was fixed, it was all too obvious. I mean, he had boxed for 8 years. He could tell, he said.

Oh, you boxed? Yea, I played football in highschool, I can tell that the Chiefs threw the game against the Broncos this weekend too. I mean, I played football, I can tell.

Idiot. Then he would find anyone who didn’t look Filipino to tell his tale to, which was kind of hard. Through the first round, Pacquiao got a flurry of punches out. “C’mon you guys, he’s punching his gloves, those aren’t even connecting.”

Through the second round, he threw out that he boxed for 8 years. “You guys, he’s not even connecting, he’s punching his gloves. These guys just don’t get it. He’s not even hitting him. He’s not getting through his guard. I used to box for 8 years, you guys don’t see it.” Then the HBO replay shows Margarito getting his block knocked off through his guard and his eye starts bruising, when ended up swelling almost shut by the end of the fight.

By round 3 it became “Look at him, Margarito is showing what punch he’s going to throw, that’s why he’s punching so slow. Look, he just nodded at Pacquiao, this fight is fixed. I boxed for 8 years, I know. All these people in the bar, they don’t know.”

Meanwhile, all the Pacquiao fans cheered and watched a dude 17 pounds heavier, 4 inches taller and a 6 inch reach advantage get his face realigned.

That dude honestly as entertaining as the fight itself for me, meaning not terribly entertaining but still fun. Got to hang with my cousin at Spitfire in Belltown, have a couple drinks, met an army dude who was super chill, forgot his name. I think it was Eric, or Michael, can’t remember. He bought us shots though. Awesome guy. Feel kinda bad for not remembering, but he left once the fight was over so I couldn’t repay my debt. If I ever see you Eric/Michael, I owe you.
